SIP is a signaling protocol that is used for controlling multimedia, such as phone calls, across the internet.  SIP has literally reshaped the telecommunications industry and is the signalling protocol of choice for VoIP because it handles session management very well.  It doesn’t know the details of the session only initiates, terminates, and modifies two party or multi party sessions in an efficient manner.
