So you have your cap and gown and you’re waiting for your diploma to arrive in the mail... so now what? “The world is your oyster!" But what does that even mean, and where do you start? Today we’re sharing some advice as you venture from the late nights in the library into the world of a working adult.

So you have your cap and gown and you’re waiting for your diploma to arrive in the mail... so now what? “The world is your oyster!" But what does that even mean, and where do you start?

Ramp Up Your Resume Game

First things first, how’s your resume looking? Is it still an unfinished doc just lurking in the background of your desktop? If you haven’t found out for yourself yet, the job market is a little nuts. Recruiters review anywhere from 20-50 resumes a day! Time to spruce it up and make those finishing touches that will really leave an impact on recruiters.

Since a resume is a direct representation of you, don’t let it look sloppy. The biggest factor in whether a resume is read or not is how it looks; so the best place to start is formatting and spell check. One popular website to get your creative juices flowin’ is Canva, where you can explore great (and mostly free) resume templates. Just make sure to be consistent, consistent, consistent. No one wants to see 20 different font styles on your resume.

Take charge and make some positive changes so your resume doesn’t get left in cyberspace!

Pack a Punch on Your LinkedIn Page

Still a little hesitant about hopping on the LinkedIn grind? Updating your info on LinkedIn may seem like more of a task than your Facebook, but a little can go a long way. The way you portray yourself on LinkedIn may change the way a recruiter sees you... which ultimately means, your future job can lie on the line.

One easy, yet powerful change is using keywords. Keywords trend on LinkedIn in the same way as they trend on other social media sites, and staying on the cutting edge of what is popular is a great way to get views from top recruiters or prospects. Whether this is a programming language, Google Adwords certified, Hubspot Design certified, etc… if you feel it will add value to your resume, add it! Also include these keywords in your “Summary” section to bolster your position and raise your visibility.

Master The Job Search

If you’re new to the job searching scene, it’s easy to get lost and overwhelmed, but luckily it's the 21st century and there are a plethora of online resources to help you out!

For starters, websites like Glassdoor, Indeed, ZipRecruiter, and Monster are great for browsing through available jobs. You can upload your resume straight to the site and apply to jobs with a click of a button. You can even track the times your application has been viewed and get an inside look at working for the company through employee reviews.

If you’re like almost every recent college grad and still unsure what direction you’re headed, full immersion programs may be the way you want to go. Some of our web dev extraordinaires attended LearningFuze's Full-Immersion program where they perfected their web development skills and could fully plunge into web dev as a career path. Other popular coding bootcamps Ytel’s employees have used include Flatiron SchoolCode Dojo, and OC Code School.

Own the job Interview

Don’t let the pressure of the interview process get to your head. Remember job interviews are ultimately a conversation between two people. At the end of the day, you’re interviewing them just as much as they’re interviewing you… so come armed with questions!

Before you buy what they’re selling, get the low-down on what a typical day might look like in their office space. Would their culture reflect your beliefs?

Say Bye-Bye To Wardrobe Bore-drobe

Used to your college ways of rolling out of bed, kicking it in your sweats and calling it a day? Time to get acquainted with professional work attire.

Recent studies have actually proven that the way we dress “has symbolic meaning for us, whether it's 'professional work attire' or 'relaxing weekend wear', so when we put it on we prime the brain to behave in ways consistent with that meaning" (Forbes). Your attire ultimately shows your interest in what you’re doing- show ‘em you mean business!

Bottom line: dress to impress. If your closet is prepared for success, this means less time getting ready in the morning and less stress before you even get to work. So start your day off right!

Make An Impact

Truth be told, the first job you land postgrad usually isn’t where you’ll end up forever. Don’t sweat it if you end up second-guessing yourself. Give it time, do your best, learn what you can, and make lasting connections with your boss and colleagues. Don’t burn any bridges. Who knows what life will throw atchya, maybe you’ll land back at your first job in a completely different position.

Embrace the unknown! Life after college graduation is full of insecurity and fear of the future. The best way to combat these feelings is to simply be prepared and ask LOTS of questions. Don’t be afraid of rejection! Let someone’s “no” be the motivation to challenge yourself and grow your interview skills!
