    Defining Your Company Culture in 2017

    What does your company stand for? This question is an important one to acknowledge and answer by not only your leadership team, but every employee in 2017. Why is culture so important? Culture is made up of the values, beliefs, underlying assumptions, attitudes, and behaviors shared by a group of people. Culture is the behavior that results when a group arrives at a set of - generally unspoken and unwritten - rules for working together.

    1. Adjust your hiring processes 

    Building the right team is crucial to shaping your company culture. Sit down with your management team and recruiters and discuss the current hiring process; what could be improved upon? Decide on the core values you want every new hire to possess, and go from there. The best way to attract the ideal employee is to already have a team of folks who share those same values. 

    2. Let your employees lead and grow

    Promoting from within shows faith in your current team and that same promise for your future hires. Employees that see their peers getting promotions, experiencing growth from within the company will take note of that and typically want it, too. That is a core value of your company culture that you should look for in your team members... the motivation to grow and lead, not just remain stagnant in the same position. 

    3. Assign a Culture leader 

    Having one person who leads the culture within your organization is ideal because they can spearhead the entire effort. Whether it's one individual or a team (like your HR department), you will find it beneficial to have an assigned person with this task in their wheelhouse. Culture is not something to take lightly, however. Ensure that whoever you choose is up for the challenge, and is willing to attend educational seminars and conferences on culture to remain up to date on the latest trends and happenings. 

    4. Review your company's core values, decision making, behaviors, beliefs and attitudes

    If you've been in business for more than a year, these should already be in place. Reflecting and reevaluating your values and beliefs as a company is a smart business decision as the new year begins. These define your culture and are a direct reflection of your business, so ensuring that your company, from the top down, are on the same page about them, is crucial.
